El Mo opens league at Piner; Analy to host Petaluma
The El Molino Lions finished up preseason play in winning fashion last Saturday, scoring a dominant 38-7 victory over the host Ferndale Wildcats.
The convincing win avenged a 28-7 loss to the Wildcats last year and came in the pre-league finale, pushing El Mo’s record to an even 2-2 heading into the Sonoma County League schedule this week.
“Our offense did a great job in the first half with four different players scoring touchdowns,” El Molino head coach Randy Parmeter reported, citing touchdowns from Jacob Sani, Jalen Hall, Sam Wilson-Mietz and Jack Fricker.
The Lions will open SCL action at Piner High School in Santa Rosa this Saturday, Sept. 23 in a 1:30 p.m. varsity kickoff. The Prospectors (2-2) are fresh off a 40-7 loss to Galileo but figure to pose a good test for El Mo.
“We’re just looking to keep the consistency with our offense and continue to improve,” Parmeter noted. “We also want to make sure our defense continues to play well.”
Quick start defangs Wildcats
The Lions played arguably their best ball of the season on Saturday, with their playmakers doing what they do best in taking it to the unsuspecting Wildcats.
After jumping out to a 7-0 first-quarter lead, El Molino erupted with a series of big plays in the second quarter to produce three unanswered touchdowns. The Lions led 28-0 at the half and outscored Ferndale 10-7 the rest of the way en route to a 38-7 rout.
Quarterback Sani turned in a great outing, completing 16 of 27 pass attempts for 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns while adding another score on the ground.
Leading rushers included Carmelo Salas (9-60 yards, TD), Wilson-Mietz (11-47 yards, TD) and Fricker (5-21 yards). Top receivers were Hall (4-83 yards, TD), Wilson-Mietz (5-39 yards), Fricker (5-38 yards, TD), Andy Junge (1-30 yards) and Wyatt Stringfellow (1-35 yards).  Fricker was a perfect 5-5 on point-after kicks.
Although there were no defensive stats available, Stringfellow had a 55-yard interception return for the Lions.
Tigers to host Petaluma in showdown
Analy (1-2) is coming off a bye on Sept. 15 and should be rested and ready when it opens the SCL campaign this Friday, Sept. 22 against Petaluma (7:30 p.m. varsity kickoff).
The Trojans (4-0) are among a group of teams expected to challenge the five-time defending league champion Tigers for supremacy this year
“We’re looking forward to it,” Analy head coach James Foster said. “We have to be disciplined on defense and everyone needs to focus on what their job is every single play. Offensively we just need to execute and not let simple mistakes kill drives.”
