The high school wrestling season may be over, but that hasn’t slowed a handful of local athletes as they continue to hone their skills in spring tournaments for the El Molino Wildcats youth team.
El Mo sophomore Erik Dimond and eighth grade brother Curby Dimond took the mat at Saturday’s Maria Carrillo Tournament, a Coastal Mountain Wrestling Association sanctioned event that included kids aged 5-17.
An eighth grader, Curby Dimond placed first in his weight class in the Folkstyle Schoolboy Division, while sophomore Erik Dimond wrestled five matches in less than an hour in the Freestyle Junior Division.
In addition, El Molino Wildcat coach Ryan Berger also logged time on the mat at the Carrillo tourney, going 1-1 in the Freestyle competition in his first action in over 20 years. Â
Ricioli earns All American status
El Mo sophomore state qualifier Hannah Ricioli also kept her foot on the gas with Team California, traveling to the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals in Oklahoma City. Ricioli more than held her own in the prestigious three-day event, finishing in seventh place in the 16-Under division and eighth overall in the Junior division. The great showing earned her All American honors in both categories. In addition, Ricioli competed with one of two California Dual teams, going 2-1 in the competition.
El Mo clinic on tap
The El Molino wrestling program will conduct a clinic at the school on Saturday, April 6, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The cost of the clinic is $25 and a USA Wrestling card is required.
