Most are familiar with the story of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,”
but not many have ever heard of the “The Girl Who Cried Wolf.”
Well, now it’s her turn.
“There needs to be more starring roles for girls,”said Adam
Goldman of Tater Tot Productions, who took the basic story line of
the well-known children’s favorite, and made alterations to the
plot creating a lead role for a female actress. He considers the
play, “The Girl Who Cried Wolf,” a tribute to self care, honesty,
and animals.
The show will open on Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m. at the
Art/Dance Space in downtown Sebastopol. Tickets are $6 each and
include a free cookie from Sebastopol Cookie which is located down
the hall from the theater. The show will run every Sunday through
the month of August.
In Goldman’s play, the girl who cried wolf is visited by a host
of characters including an English Couple, silly animal catchers, a
tofu hot dog vendor and a yogi.
“It really gets kids to think about honesty and also how to
relax, stop, think, and even meditate in a difficult situation,”
Goldman said.
Tater Tot Productions (TTP) is a local and professional
children’s theater troupe of adults who perform for children,
creating original adaptations of children’s stories that are 35
minutes in length and include audience participation. The current
plays are designed for children ages three to 10 years old, but
references to cultural themes in Sonoma County help to make the
theatrical productions entertaining for adults as well as
children.
TTP is a traveling theater company that began two years ago in
an effort to provide quality professional theater to communities
throughout Sonoma County.
“We want to supply a little theater education, which in many
cases has been cut due to school budget constraints,” Goldman
said.
In the last school year, the group traveled to Fort Ross, Marin
and Sonoma to present the “Brementown Musicians” to young
audiences. They performed in libraries, schools, preschools,
recreation centers, and other public venues.
A discussion with children and teachers took place after each of
the performances and incorporated California’s curriculum on
theater education.
“Our goal is to get in all schools in Sonoma County and we are
looking for a grant in order to be able to do that,” Goldman
said.
