In a night of admiration, pride and the quest to bring back old traditions, the Cloverdale Eagle Pride Boosters Club held it’s first annual CHS Fall Sports Banquet. A fun filled event that packed the Citrus Fair auditorium with players, coaches and proud family members was the start of a tri-annual event where after each season a sports banquet will be held to honor all the junior varsity and varsity athletes in their respective sports.
The fall banquet consisted of nine teams which include Cheerleading, JV and Varsity Football, JV and Varsity Volleyball, Varsity Boys Soccer, Varsity Girls Soccer, Varsity Boys Cross Country and Varsity Girls Cross Country.
The next event will the Winter Sports Banquet which will honor the JV and Varsity Boys Basketball and the JV and Varsity Girls Basketball teams.
The last event of the school year will be the Spring Sports Banquet which will honor the JV and Varsity Baseball, JV and Varsity Softball, JV and Varsity Tennis, JV and Varsity Boys Track and Field and JV and Varsity Girls Track and Field.
As far as bringing back Cloverdale High School traditions, the Boosters Club has also included in their ceremonies the letterman patches, which include the Eagles Block C letters, sports emblems and stars that represent years of service. Student athletes can choose to purchase letterman’s jackets (male or female styles) or they can save them in scrapbooks or other keepsake albums.
The Eagles cheerleading squad did a wonderful job decorating for the event.
Coaches were given the microphone to present their players as well as pass out individual awards, sports letters and some inspirational stories. Food was provided for the athletes as the parents and family members paid a fee as part of a fundraising effort to cover the costs of the event.
The spaghetti feast was provided by Full of Flavor Catering, run by the Wlodarczyk family and the facility was provided by Bonnie Wlodarczyk and the Citrus Fair board.
Two of the awards presented in the evening had emotional ties to the community; very special honors for two very special coaches and members of our Cloverdale community.
The first honorary award was given in honor of a coach who has spent many years on the gridiron representing the blue and gold. Coach Rick Berry coached the Eagles football team as the head coach for 238 games in a span of 23 years. He has shown hard work, dedication and a passion for the game that worked its way into each and every one of his players. He pushed the kids in the classroom as well and expected his players to respect the game and each other. The first recipient of this year’s Rick Berry Commitment to Excellence award went to junior varsity player Carlos Hernandez.
The second honorary award was in honor of a longtime coach, mentor and community member, who touched the lives of many students within the Cloverdale community and beyond.
He exemplified the characteristics of the Little League motto: Character, Courage and Loyalty in his service to coaching, his church and his community. As stated by the presenter the recipient of the Tony Villa Award “is an example of what coaches want their young men to become” “Someone who shows commitment, someone who is adaptable, reliable, and responsible. A person who respects others and has a great sense of humor” Coach Villa’s favorite quote was “If we don’t, we’ll always wish we did.”
