Cloverdale teams looking to get in full week of action after rains
The Lady Eagles maintained their grip on first place in abbreviated league softball action on April 14, mounting a ferocious 18-hit attack in a five-inning, 13-0 romp over St. Helena.
The convincing road victory came on the heels of yet another rainout three days earlier in Clear Lake and pushed Cloverdale’s overall record to 8-2.
“The Eagles responded well in St. Helena after a along layoff due to rain,” CHS coach Margaret Fitzgerald reported. “The bats were strong and the defense and pitching were good in the win.”
At the start of play this week the Eagles (3-0) were sharing the top spot in the NCL-1 hierarchy with Kelseyville (4-0), one game up on Lower Lake (2-1). Rounding out the league standings were Clear Lake (2-2), Fort Bragg (2-3), Willits (1-3), St. Helena (1-4) and Middletown (0-2).
At press time Cloverdale was about to resume league action in an April 18 home clash with Willits, followed by a road make-up game at Clear Lake on April 19 and a Friday, April 21 visit to Kelseyville. All games start at 4 p.m.
Friday’s trip to St. Helena was a show of skill and power, with the Eagles jumping out with a pair of runs in each of the first two frames to stake pitcher Tehya Bird to a 4-0 lead. Cloverdale busted it wide open in a four-run fourth, adding five more runs in the fifth to force an early stoppage in a 13-0 rout.
Bird (5 IP, 1 hit, 11 Ks) was dominant in all phases in notching her eighth season win, while pacing the attack with four hits, including two doubles, three runs scored and six runs batted in.
Other top hitters included Heather Sterling (3 for 4, 3 runs), Aly Bernal (3 for 3, run, RBI), Josie Marrufo (2 for 3, 2 runs), Alma Beltran (2 for 4), Hannah Bireschi (1 for 3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs), Lane Hughes (1 for 3, 2 runs, RBI), Emma Adams (1 for 3) and Angelina Cordova (1 for 3).
Baseball scheduling notes
The varsity baseball Eagles (1-5, 0-2) were rained out of their scheduled games last week but will resume league action on April 20 at Kelseyville, followed by a home tilt with Middletown on Tuesday, April 25. Both games start at 4 p.m.
