Bird fires no-hitter against Fort Bragg
The Lady Eagles are right in the thick of the NCL-1 softball chase this week, claiming recent lopsided league victories over Middletown and Fort Bragg.
Cloverdale rode the strong arm of freshman pitcher Tehya Bird in each game, adding a 16-1 non-league blowout over visiting Laytonville on April 26 in pushing their overall record to an impressive 13-3.
At the start of play this week the Lady Eagles were in second place in league with a 7-1 record, one back of first-place Kelseyville (8-0) and one ahead of Lower Lake (6-2). Rounding out the league standings were Clear Lake (4-5) Fort Bragg (3-5), Willits (3-5), Middletown (1-7) and St. Helena (1-8).
This week the girls will travel to Lower Lake on May 2 (after press time) and return home to host Clear Lake on Thursday, May 4. Both games start at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile the varsity baseball Eagles continued to struggle on the league diamond, yielding 11 runs in one inning in a 13-3 five-inning loss to visiting Middletown on April 25.
Cloverdale (1-6, 2-9) resumes league play at Lower Lake (May 2) and will entertain St. Helena on Tuesday, May 9 (4 p.m.).
Softballers on a roll
The Lady Eagles played host to Middletown in an April 25 clash, staking pitcher Tehya Bird (7 IP, 4 hits, ER, 14 Ks) to a 7-0 cushion after four. The Eagles tacked on four more for good measure in the seventh on their way to an 11-1 rout.
Pacing the bat attack were Bird (4 for 4, 3B, 4 runs, 2 RBIs), Emily Harris (3 for 4, run), Heather Sterling (3 for 5, 3 runs), Josie Marrufo (2 for 5, run, 3 RBIs), Lane Hughes (2 for 4, run, 3 RBIs), Alma Beltran (2 for 3, 2 RBIs) and Hanna Bireschi (1 for 5, RBI).
Cloverdale was fresh off a 16-1 win over Laytonville when it took the field against visiting Fort Bragg on Friday, removing all suspense in a seven-run uprising in the first. The Eagles added two runs in the third and fourth innings to force an early stoppage in an 11-0 romp.
Bird (5 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 5 Ks) fired a no-hitter, while top hitters included Aly Bernal (2 for 3, 2B, run, 4 RBIs), Bireschi (1 for 2, run, RBI), Hughes (1 for 3, run, RBI), Sterling (1 for 3, run), Bird (1 for 2, 2 runs) and Harris (1 for 2, run, RBI).
