Ladies all alone in first place; boys settle into second
Cloverdale High School basketball teams turned in a great stretch on the league hard-court, with both varsity boys and girls claiming a pair of wins.
The boys (11-4, 3-1) stayed just a game back of first place Kelseyville in the NCL 1 standings, thanks in part to recent home and away wins over Fort Bragg (61-51) and Lower Lake (55-48).
At press time the Eagles were preparing to continue a long road swing with games at Willits (Jan. 16), followed by a Friday, Jan. 19 visit to Clear Lake (7:30 p.m.). Cloverdale will travel to St. Helena next Tuesday, Jan. 23 (7 p.m.).
Meanwhile the Lady Eagles (11-4, 4-0) maintained their spot at the top of the league heap with road and home wins over Fort Bragg (62-34) and Lower Lake (70-47). This week, Cloverdale will visit Willits on Jan. 16 before returning home to host Clear Lake in a first-place showdown this Friday, Jan. 19 in a 7:30 p.m. varsity tip-off.
Boys claim wins
The Eagles were locked in a tight battle in their Jan. 9 home clash with Fort Bragg, with Cloverdale emerging with a 29-28 lead at the half. The Eagles increased the advantage to seven points after three and fought off a determined Timberwolves squad en route to a 61-51 win.
Eli Arreola logged his best game of the season with a team-high 16 points, adding three rebounds and one steal. Other top scorers included Jordan Persons (13 points, 4 assists, 3 steals, 1 block), Christian Chavez (10 points, 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal), Ross Sceales (6 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals), Marcos Jimenez (6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal), Josh Lemley (5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block), Drew Edens (2 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal), Alex Segobiano (2 points, 3 rebounds) and Mario Lopez (1 point).
Cloverdale pulled out a wild one on Friday at Lower Lake, watching a 18-7 first-quarter lead evaporate to eke out 25-23 edge at the half. The Eagles held a 41-40 advantage after three and hung on for an eventual 55-48 win.
Persons turned in a sensational outing with 25 points, three rebounds and one steal. Also in the scoring column were Chavez (7 points, 8 boards, 1 steal), Arreola (6 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals), Lemley (3 points, 3 rebounds) and Jimenez (3 points, 2 rebounds).
Ladies vault to top
The Lady Eagles continued their hot start in a Jan. 9 visit to Fort Bragg, jumping all over the T-Wolves to lead 34-19 at the half. Cloverdale increased the cushion in the final two quarters on the way to a 62-34 rout.
Pacing the Eagles’ attack were Camryn Figueroa (15 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists), Tehya Bird (19 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists), Kayli Persons (9 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), Jaedyn Jenkins (5 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists), Maci Hernandez (4 points, 3 rebounds), Catherine Driver (2 points, 2 assists), Shaye Stewart (2 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists) and Marina Lopez (2 points).
The ladies played host to Lower Lake on Friday, erasing a 18-14 first quarter deficit to grab a 32-31 edge at the break. It was all Cloverdale after intermission, outscoring the Trojans 38-16 in the last two periods to claim a 70-47 rout.
Leading the offense were Jenkins (16 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists), Bird (15 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists), Figueroa (14 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists), Shaye Stewart (10 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists), Persons (6 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), Hernandez (4 points, 3 rebounds), Driver (3 points, 2 assists) and Lopez (2 points).
