Cloverdale is No. 2 seed in NCS playoffs this week
The Cloverdale Lady Eagles put the final icing on the cake in a remarkable winter basketball campaign, soundly defeating Clear Lake and St. Helena to complete an undefeated, 14-0 league season.
Cloverdale (22-4) will now turn its focus to the 16-team North Coast Section Division 5 playoff tournament this week, where they’ll represent the No. 2 seed.
At press time the Eagles were preparing to host No. 15 Roseland University Prep in the NCS opener on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m., with the survivor advancing to play the winner of No. 7 Bentley versus No. 10 Sonoma Academy on Saturday, Feb. 16 (time and location to be determined).
The full list of NCS Division 5 teams in seeding order is: St. Bernard’s, Cloverdale, Rincon Valley Christian, University, San Domenico, Head Royce, Bentley, Marin Academy, St. Vincent, Sonoma Academy, International, Athenian, Holy Names, Valley Christian, Roseland University Prep and Branson.
Ladies run the table
Cloverdale left nothing to chance in the final stretch of league action, starting with a Feb. 5 dismantling of visiting Clear Lake. The Eagles led by 11 at the half and exploded on a 35-14 second-half run to close out a 69-37 rout. The win locked up the league title outright.
Leading the attack were Tehya Bird (27 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals), Kaylee King (13 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal), Marina Lopez (6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal), Catherine Driver (6 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal), Kayli Persons (5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal), Alyssa Moffett (5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), Ahnna Randolph (5 points, 1 rebound, 2 steals), Morgan Sceales (2 points, 2 rebounds) and Maci Hernandez (2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal).
Cloverdale celebrated Senior Night in the league finale on Feb. 7 against St. Helena, paying tribute to graduating veterans Kayli Persons and Marina Lopez in a pre-game ceremony. The Eagles used the added emotion to jump out to a 41-18 halftime cushion on their way to a 62-39 victory.
