The defending league and North Coast Section softball champion Eagles stayed perfect on the young season this week, posting recent wins over Credo, 9-0, and Clear Lake, 3-1.
The victories, which included the NCL 1 opener against the Cardinals, pushed Cloverdale’s league mark to 1-0 and 6-0 on the year.
The Eagles will resume a full slate of action this week, weather permitting, starting with a March 26 visit to Willits, followed by a non-league trip to St. Vincent in Petaluma on March 27. Other upcoming games include a home tilt with Kelseyville on Friday, March 29 and a road visit to Fort Bragg on Tuesday, April 2. All games start at 4 p.m.
Eagles win a pair
Cloverdale rode the hot hand of starting pitcher Tehya Bird in the March 19 home clash with Credo, as the junior ace controlled the opposition in a complete-game, four-hit, 13-strikeout performance. Cloverdale tallied three runs in the third and five in the fifth to gain separation, adding an insurance run in the sixth en route to a 9-0 win.
Swinging hot bats for the Eagles were Bird (4 for 4, 2 2Bs, 3 runs), Heather Sterling (2 for 3, 2 runs), Maci Hernandez (2 for 4, 2 RBIs), Janaye Hammond (2 for 4, run), Lane Hughes (1 for 4, run, 2 RBIs), Nicky Martinez (1 for 2, run, RBI), Vanessa Fisher (1 for 4, run, RBI) and Alyssa Moffet (1 for 1, RBI).
Cloverdale played host to Clear Lake in the league opener on March 21, breaking a scoreless tie with two runs in the third frame to give Bird (7 IP, 4 hits, 0 ERs, 15 Ks) all she would need in an eventual 3-1 victory. Top hitters were Fisher (1 for 2, 3 RBIs), Kayli King (1 for 3), Sterling (1 for 2, 2 runs) and Bird (1 for 1, run).
