The varsity football Eagles saw their three-game win streak snapped on Oct. 25, falling to visiting perennial NCL-1 power Middletown, 47-7 in the home finale at Jack Allen Stadium.
Cloverdale entered Friday’s meeting one game back of the Mustangs, but had no answer for the vaunted Middletown rushing attack in falling to 3-2 in the NCL-1 and 3-5 on the season. The Mustangs improved their league-leading record to 4-0 and 7-1 overall. Â
Middletown used a 148-yard effort by running back Austin Benson to control the clock and scoreboard, finding pay-dirt on its first three offensive possessions in jumping out to an early lead.
The Eagles scored their lone touchdown in the second quarter, when senior quarterback Josh Holden scampered in from 13 yards out to trail 27-7 at the half.
Cloverdale will take a sense of urgency into its next game, when it travels to Fort Bragg this Friday, Nov. 1 in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Eagles need to win at least one of their two remaining games to be playoff eligible. Â
Cloverdale will finish out the regular season at St. Helena on Nov. 8.
The Fort Bragg Timberwolves (3-2, 4-4) are fresh off a 47-7 loss to St. Helena last week and are also on the NCS playoff bubble. Cloverdale and Fort Bragg are currently tied for third place in league.
