Cloverdale visits St. Vincent on Saturday
The varsity football Eagles left nothing to chance on Saturday in the season opener at Calistoga, jumping all over the host Wildcats from snap to whistle in a 35-0 romp.
Cloverdale (1-0) rode the hot hand of senior quarterback Greg Scaramella and the strong legs of junior running back Luke Bernardi with 22 unanswered points in the first quarter, and then let its defense do the rest en route to a lopsided victory.
The win gives the Eagles momentum as they navigate a challenging four-game road swing to start the season, continuing this Saturday, Sept. 6 with a visit to perennial power St. Vincent of Petaluma. Kickoff times for the JV and varsity games are 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively. Â
St. Vincent (0-1) opened up with a tough 13-6 loss to St. Bernard’s on Aug. 30. Â
Eagles serve notice
Cloverdale came out with a vengeance in Saturday’s season opener at Calistoga, as Scaramella directed an early scoring drive resulting in an eight-yard touchdown scamper by Luke Bernardi. The Eagles made good on the ensuing run (Bernardi) for the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
Cloverdale went up by two scores on its next possession, as Scaramella called his own number on a four-yard keeper, followed by a conversion pass to receiver Adrian Bernardi for a 16-0 advantage. The pair hooked up again late in the opening period when Scaramella found Adrian Bernardi on a 30-yard scoring strike giving the Eagles a 22-0 cushion at the end of one.
With its defense controlling the trenches, Cloverdale capped a dominant first half when receiver John McMillan hauled in a 20-yard pass from Scaramella for a 29-0 bulge at the break.
The Eagles emptied their bench after intermission, taking advantage of the comfortable lead to give many of their reserves ample playing time. Running back Mason Meier put the final touches on a dominant effort with a two-yard scoring burst in the third quarter before a running clock in the final period would help expedite a 35-0 win.
Scaramella enjoyed a solid night under center, completing six of eight pass attempts for 108 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Other offensive leaders included Luke Bernardi (18-150 yards rushing, TD), Meier (9-45 yards rushing, TD), Adrian Bernardi (2-45 yards receiving, TD), McMillan (1-20 yards receiving, TD), and Damian McKinney (2-45 yards receiving).
There were no defensive stats available. Â
